university of sherbrooke

With its decision to build the New Longueuil Campus, the University of Sherbrooke is taking an important step towards creating a multidisciplinary, multi-purpose, “City of Knowledge” in Longueil. The addition heightens the institution's profile as a university with a growing presence on the South Shore of Montreal. Situated at the heart of the city and at its public transport hub, the project presents a unique opportunity, not only to construct a new university campus, but also, in partnership with the City of Longueuil, to develop the downtown area.

The proposed concept is for a sustainable project and responds to the University's wishes to build a “beacon” campus, with a teaching and research philosophy that favours a global, open and progressive approach that interfaces with and fosters a long-term relationship between education and the labour market. While focusing on teaching and innovation, the University of Sherbrooke is taking the lead in matters of sustainable development and integrating environmental strategies into the project. The campus' aesthetics are to reflect contemporary ideas, fostering the bold innovation that will pave the way to the future.

Located at the heart of the development of the core of the City of Longueuil - near the Metro station and Place Charles-Lemoyne - the new Longueuil Campus is an opportunity to consolidate and develop the site with its surroundings. The 16-storey building is elevated on an islet bordered on the south by the AMT intermodal transit station, on the north, by the Place Charles-Lemoyne, and on the east, by Saint-Charles Boulevard.

The “City of Knowledge” is a redefinition and creation of new interior spaces, exteriors and public spaces that connect and anchor the project to the site, the city and its neighbouring geography and contours. With its main entrance on Place Charles-Lemoyne, the campus forms the new heart of the city centre, extending the indoor and outdoor pedestrian pathways to those of the City of Longueil. The university's main tower has a presence that is at once distinct, powerful, and innovative. The building was conceived as a daring benchmark, assuring it major visibility as a destination and a symbol of the university's new presence, and of Longueuil 's new city centre.
