background

St-Eustache Hospital

The project consists of the major expansion and restructuring of a project the firm completed in
1992.

The expansion, in three separate places (one of 3 000m², is able to support a future level) include the following facilities:

• 7-room surgical block

• Intensive care

• Dedicated clinics: in the areas of outpatient, electrophysiology and general-purpose clinics

•Sterilization facility

• 2 new care units

• New medical imaging facilities

• Ambulatory services

PROGRAM NEEDS

The original program described a complete construction of the main extension against the existing four-storey building, which would have caused major interruptions to the daily operations of the surgical block, the sterilization facility and the intensive care.

PROPOSED SOLUTIONS

The solution presented was to build a space that is nearly detached from the existing section, which has the effect of:

• Minimizing interruptions to services/activities

• Diminishing the costs of demolishing the existing exterior walls

• Bringing more natural light into the heart of the building through the creation of a courtyard between the new and
existing buildings
