Collège de Rosemont, CEGEP @ Distance ce

The expansion of College de Rosemont to include distance learning offices. The Distance Learning CEGEP has a clientele of +/- 18 000 students at the collegiate level across all regions of Quebec, as well as internationally (most of the latter are in French language courses).

Requirements to fulfill: the 2 300m2, $6.6M project must accommodate 100 people. The plan is distributed on three levels and links a vitreous connecting space to the existing building, adding a wing with its own independent entrance to the CEGEP. The original idea for the addition was to give the distance learning CEGEP its own identity on the Collège de Rosemont site.

Retained solutions: the architectural plans presented two building levels with one semi-subterranean level. Level 100 hosts the common and technical spaces. Level 200 contains the reception, customer service and information directorate. On Level 300, we find the Directors' offices.

The structure is planned in concrete and makes provisions for a future level. The concept of the floors is to have a central nucleus of enclosed spaces with open spaces around the perimeter to maximize natural light, views, open space, ventilation efficiency, flexibility and adaptability. The 18 x 38m simple rectangular form on the street creates a new density on the block, giving the Distance Learning CEGEP an established appeal.

The design extends to a composition of four archetypes: the courtyard, the plaza, the display and the private garden.

A) The courtyard, on a similar scale to the existing ones, contributes to, reinforces and proposes a continuity with the existing composition.

B) Its configuration draws a right angle with the existing wing, creating a new home base. The plaza builds a new identity for the Distance Learning CEGEP by offering a separate entrance, apart from the others of the college.

C) The window display allows for the transparent exposition of the existing facade, and the wall coverings on the rear facade at the junction of the existing one makes for a strong visual connection between the plaza and the courtyard.

D) The courtyard is divided between a parking lot and a private garden in continuity with the program's common spaces (kitchen, dining room, meeting rooms).

The most important element of the design was to change the attitude of users vis-à-vis closed offices vs. the open spaces of our proposition. We grounded our approach in the client's will to foster exchange between employees. The plan elaborates on a nucleus of core services surrounded by open, democratic spaces, making them the most beautiful spaces of the project.
